About Reserva Natural Integral de Jandía

Located in the Jandía peninsula within the municipality of Pájara on Fuerteventura island, the Reserva Natural Integral de Jandía covers an extensive area of rugged volcanic terrain, golden sandy beaches, and steep cliffs along the Atlantic coast. This integral reserve is part of the larger Parque Natural de Jandía and represents one of the most ecologically significant protected areas in the Canary Islands. The reserve safeguards rare xerophytic shrublands, endemic plant species such as the Jandía cardón (Euphorbia handiensis), and important nesting sites for seabirds including the critically endangered Eleonora's falcon. With minimal human infrastructure allowed, the reserve preserves the area’s natural processes and habitats in a near-pristine condition. Visitors can explore parts of the peninsula via carefully maintained trails, offering breathtaking panoramic views of volcanic peaks like Pico de la Zarza, the highest point on Fuerteventura. The coastline features pristine beaches like Cofete and wide, wild spaces where snorkelers and divers encounter rich marine biodiversity. The reserve's remote nature appeals to hikers, wildlife enthusiasts, and photographers seeking solitude and unspoiled landscapes. Historically, the area has limited development, and conservation efforts focus on habitat protection and preventing erosion or invasive species introduction. The Reserva Natural Integral de Jandía provides a vital refuge for endemic species and a rare glimpse into volcanic island ecosystems shaped by millions of years of geological activity under Atlantic trade winds. Its blend of stark ruggedness and delicate biology makes it a unique destination for responsible outdoor recreation and nature observation.
